At a board meeting last week Katie Glenn, a parent of District 87, walked up to the podium to speak about some events that have occurred over the past two years. Glenn tells Cities about her experiences and shares her thoughts, opinions and intentions while making a statement about District 87 schools: Bent Elementary and Washington.
District 87 officials responded to the claims of denial to speak at the board meeting and the issues surrounding Glenn and her son.
Last January, Glenn’s son went to Bent Elementary. She has moved him to Washington due to “malicious bullying” he has experienced. Glenn said teachers, principals and students have bullied her son.
Glenn said when she called the principal, Guille Delgado, and asked why her son said they didn’t say the pledge… Glenn said she received the response: ‘We do our school pledge, but we do not say the Pledge of Allegiance due to Covid.’
“My son expressed that Bent Elementary had BLM, LGBTQ, and Biden flags but no American flags. This bothered him,” said Glenn.
In March, Glenn said her son was sent home time and time again for using the restroom more often than other students, due to medical reasons. Glenn said the school did not honor his medical reason he was marked for COVID.
“I was forced to contact his doctor to send a note to honor and respect these needs…since I, his parent, do not have a say so or enough value, in the care and in the best interest of my son‘s health,” said Glenn.
In the next months of April and May, Glenn decided to opt her son out of sexual education and rather opted in for hygiene and nutrition.
“The children who were a part of this grooming instruction were allowed to attend a pizza party. Those who weren’t didn’t get pizza,” said Glenn. “I of course will not allow anyone to groom my child by this pedophilia curriculum.”
Glenn said she had called Delgado again to complain about the exclusion. Glenn said Delgado ensured her that Glenn’s son would receive hygiene and nutrition education. Glenn said her son was sent home with a stick of deodorant the next day.
“I asked my son about what he learned for hygiene care and nutrition and there wasn’t a single lesson of instruction taught. He was given a bottle of deodorant and sent on his way,” said Glenn.
Glenn said at Bent Elementary, the school nurse Nurse Sue Rutherford called her and and said Glenn’s son needed to come home for COVID, due to his restroom use….Glenn said the nurse was still dismissing the doctor’s note.
“Sue told my son not to flush his poop in the toilet because she needed to look at it. My son, mortified, of course flushed the toilet. Sue then tried to COVID PCR test swab my son in her office while I was on my way to pick him up. I never gave consent… In fact, I made it clear not to come near my child with a PCR test,” said Glenn. “Luckily my son has the courage and voice from his mother that God instilled in us and refused to let her test him. I then had to call the principal Delgado to state, ‘I will have nurse Sue arrested if she encounters my son one more time.’”
In April, Glenn’s now 10-year old son had told her that in his fourth grade classroom that a CNN 10 news report verdict of George Floyd was shown in the classroom of Adelle Masching.
“My son is Caucasian and the minority at the school (Bent Elementary). There were four other Caucasian children in that class,” said Glenn. “My son said after the news stated this evil, hateful lie that all white people are racist…all the classmates looked around at each other. The next day he lost all of his new friends as a new student, and only the Caucasian classmates played together.”
In August, Glenn said her son while attending Washington, was asked, along with by Mr. Jones what his opinion about the COVID-19 vaccine was.
“While signing my son out at the school office, my son says to me that Mr. Jones, in English class, had asked the class of fifth grade what their opinion of the COVID vaccine is. He politically influenced the class and told the fifth grade class that he has the COVID vaccine, his children have the COVID vaccine and all of his animals have the vaccine and everyone should have the vaccine,” said Glenn. “I immediately told the nurse and receptionist to stop this at once and to inform Jeffrey Lockenvitz right away. My son told me when Mr. Jones presented this topic of discussion to the class he went into the bathroom because he felt afraid and uncomfortable.”
Glenn said her son was approached by Mr. Jones in the bathroom and told to come back to class.
“The next day my son went to school. I picked him up from school at the end of the day. My son was hysterical and inconsolable. I asked him what was wrong and he told me four of his classmates called him retarded, called his mom retarded, called him fat, told him he should die and his mom should die,” said Glenn. “I was beyond furious. I asked my son if he told a teacher and he said yes but he was not sure who the teacher was because she is a substitute. I never got a call about this.”
Jones and Lockenvitz apologized, according to Glenn.
“They both told my son they know that they have to build trust with him and that his opinion matters. Since the last few weeks into the present right now, Mr. Lockenvitz has dropped the ball and has not called me back or followed through with the plan we made,” said Glenn. “ It is to the point that I have been graceful, patient and understanding. I made it clear I want mindful learning to come from this situation instead of fighting with lawsuits and firing of staff. I showed mercy and grace which I believe and now I am aware that my kindness was taken advantage of and has led me to be lied to and manipulated and passively apologized to with lip service and with no action.”
On Thursday, a day after the school board meeting, Glenn said she was told by her son that Miranda Buob, a teacher, pulled aside her son and a little girl in the class.
“With classmates around them to hear, she addressed my son about this little girl, hearing that he called her ugly and stupid. My son declared he would never say that and he doesn’t know who this girl even is or why she would be told these rumors,” said Glenn. “My son also told me that they were to move seats as a new seating arrangement. The little girl sat close to my son and now sits away from him in the front of the room. I came in immediately to address this situation. I have made it clear to the staff and principal…they are to not address any incidents with my son without myself being contacted.”
The next day, Friday, Glenn had a meeting with her son’s homeroom teacher Buob and principal Lockenvitz, Glenn said in this meeting they had a list of everything to cover, the wrongdoings they have done that have transpired this month.
“Instead of talking and discussing and solving the direct issue from yesterday. Lockenvitz continued to gaslight me and manipulate the conversation to the point of me pulling my son out of school,” said Glenn. “We have the right of parents -bill of rights, article 1 and 4, the title VII, civil rights act of 1964, and the very constitutional right of Americans, first amendment and the religious clause. The right to attend a free public education, without the discrimination or separation,” said Glenn. “I will not allow this to be stripped away from me.
According Glenn, Sherri Thomas, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, said she isn’t sure what to do about the masks.. but that Glenn and she would speak in the next few days to make an appointment to sit down with Lockenvitz and Jones.
“On Wednesday I went to the board meeting to give my story and statement. I was told when I arrived and was signing in that I was signing the wrong paper and the officer would bring me the board to sign in and to wait at the front door to sign,” said Glenn. “The police officer never came with the board for me to sign and the police officers said it was too late but I could still go to the meeting. This is exactly what happened at the last board meeting I attended.”
Glenn said that the board knows who she is.
“It was now clear this time I am being kept silent for a reason. I waited for the turns of the parents who spoke and I sat in the seat for a turn to speak. When I stood up for my turn to speak, I went to the microphone and they turned it off and I directly said to Thomas, in front of all the board members, ‘please let me speak, you know I have something important to say.’”
At the meeting the hammer was slammed and the lights were turned off, and the board of educators walked away. Cities has reached out to District 87 for comment.
