Normal Fire Department Investigators are working to identify the cause of a fire that damaged a home on Normal’s east side this morning.
According to Matt Swaney, Fire Inspector and Public Information Officer, Normal Fire Department responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a fire in an upstairs bedroom at 2999 Blue Heron Rd. just after 7:00 a.m. The occupant of the home had attempted to extinguish the fire with a handheld fire extinguisher.
Firefighters arrived and quickly extinguished the remaining hot spots in the upstairs bedroom and worked to ventilate the smoke from the home with fans. During their search, firefighters located a small dog, took it outside, and reunited it with the occupants. Due to their exposure to the smoky environment, the occupants of the home were checked by Normal Fire Department paramedics but declined transportation to the hospital.
Fire damage was limited to an area around a nightstand in the upstairs bedroom. There was moderate smoke damage throughout the upper level. The home is insured, and the occupants have made alternative living arrangements until the home is repaired.
Firefighters cleared the scene a little after 8:00 a.m., but investigators are at the scene attempting to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
