Boeing settles just before trial
Just before a trial was set to begin in Chicago on Monday, Boeing and the families of two victims in a 2019 plane crash in Ethiopia reached a settlement in the case. The Boeing Max 737 MAX8 crashed minutes after takeoff in Ethiopia, killing 157 people on board. The family of U.S. Army Captain Antoine Lewis, 39, settled with Boeing on Sunday night. He was from Matteson and left behind a wife and two children.
Fuel leak investigated
A main thoroughfare was shut down over the weekend in Metro East after a fuel leak. The leak happened at a gas station in Troy. Firefighters determined the leak was coming from an underground fuel tank and worked to prevent the fuel from entering the storm sewer system and nearby creek. Fire officials said the leaking gas did not enter the city’s water system and that the local water is safe to use.
Seven tornadoes touched down
The National Weather Service is reporting that seven tornadoes touched down in southern Illinois on April 2. One tornado began in Massac County in Illinois, traveled over 12 miles and ended in Kentucky. Tornadoes also affected Saline County and Union County, and an EF-2 tornado in Johnson County was 250 yards wide and traveled nearly 6 miles.
