Attorney general sues over Trump’s education order
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and 20 other state attorneys general are asking a federal judge to halt President Donald Trump’s move to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. The group is seeking a preliminary injunction to block the mass firing of half the agency’s employees, as well as the transfer of student loan management and special education services to other federal agencies. The lawsuit argues that Trump is overstepping the power of the executive branch by dismantling a department established by Congress.
Hemp beverage regulations debated
The debate over hemp-infused products continues at the Illinois Capitol. Lawmakers discussed proposed regulation of hemp-derived intoxicating beverages in a state Senate Liquor Committee hearing Tuesday. One measure would impose taxes on hemp manufacturers and distributors. It would also force hemp businesses to be regulated by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission. The Cannabis Business Association said the proposal falls short of providing consumers the protections they deserve.
Winning Mega Millions ticket in Cortland
The winning ticket for Tuesday’s $344 million Mega Millions jackpot was bought in Illinois. According to the Illinois Lottery, the winning ticket was purchased at a Casey’s General Store in Cortland, which is located in DeKalb County. The big winner comes just before major changes take place for the lottery game. On April 8, the price of a Mega Millions ticket will increase from $2 to $5.
