More teacher layoffs possible
Teachers, students and citizens packed a school board meeting Monday to voice their concerns about plans to cut dozens of teaching positions in Edwardsville. The district announced that 16 teachers were dismissed this past Friday, and warned that more cuts may be coming. District Superintendent Patrick Shelton told attendees the cuts are necessary due to financial stability concerns. Some teachers said they weren’t given the required 15-day notice for the cuts.
Body camera law updated
Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a bill into law that addresses discrepancies between police officer body cameras and Illinois State Police dash camera laws. The measure clarifies that if a victim or witness of a crime asks a trooper to turn off their body camera, the officer must inform them that their vehicle’s dash camera will still be recording.
Missing woman’s vehicle found
A vehicle believed to belong to a woman missing since 1983 was found Monday by divers in suburban Elgin. According to Elgin police, divers identified a vehicle located near a boat launch on the Fox River. A diver was able to locate a license plate that matched the license plate of the missing 1980 Toyota Celica. On April 16, 1983, then 23-year-old Elgin resident Karen Schepers disappeared after leaving a Carpentersville bar.
