Elevated recall status for broccoli sold at Walmart
Broccoli packages sold at Walmart stores in 20 states including Illinois received an elevated recall status over a listeria contamination that could potentially be fatal. The possible contamination of Braga Fresh’s broccoli was discovered during random sampling in Texas. According to the FDA, there haven’t been any reported illnesses connected to the recalled broccoli.
Lawmakers say vandalism won’t deter mission
Two downstate lawmakers’ office was vandalized Wednesday. Police are investigating after someone threw a brick through the window of the office that state Rep. Dave Severin and state Sen. Terri Bryant share in Mt. Vernon. Both Severin and Bryant condemned the incident and said the act of violence will not deter them from their mission.
IDPH announces grants to reduce adverse birth outcomes
The Illinois Department of Public Health has announced it has awarded $4.5 million to 12 groups across the state funded through Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s 2024 Birth Equity Initiative. The grants, ranging from $100,000 to $700,000, are designed to support innovative, community-based efforts that have the potential to reduce inequities in populations historically at higher risk for adverse birth outcomes. Program recipients included Blessing Hospital in Quincy, CHOICES, a Carbondale-based agency and the Winnebago County Health Department.
