Kevin Kothe, a lifelong Bloomington resident and dedicated public servant, will retire from the City of Bloomington on June 20, 2025, after 37 years in Public Works and Engineering.
A graduate of Bloomington High School and the University of Illinois, Kevin began his career with the City in 1988. Over the years, he contributed to numerous infrastructure improvements, including road design, traffic systems, and advancing the City’s use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). His leadership roles included 12 years as City Engineer, three years as Director of Public Works, and his current role as City Engineer.
Kevin’s work has left a lasting impact on Bloomington’s infrastructure, enhancing roads, sidewalks, and water systems while pioneering the use of technology in city planning. In 2015, he received the Illinois Government Engineer of the Year Award, reflecting his commitment to innovation and excellence.
“Kevin has been a pillar of our organization, leading with integrity, passion, and a clear vision for a better Bloomington. Over nearly four decades, his efforts have impacted almost every part of our city, from the roads we travel to the water systems we rely on daily,” said City Manager Jeff Jurgens. “Kevin’s contributions have not only shaped our infrastructure but also inspired those fortunate enough to work alongside him. We are immensely grateful for his service and wish him the very best in his retirement.”
In retirement, Kevin plans to spend more time with his wife of 30 years, volunteer in the community, and enjoy personal projects. Reflecting on his career, Kevin said, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve my hometown and make a difference in our community.”
The City extends its deepest thanks to Kevin for his remarkable service and dedication to improving Bloomington.
