County creates commission after police shooting homicide
Sangamon County is creating a commission to hear from residents on how the government can prevent another tragedy after the death of Sonya Massey last month.
A former Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy is facing murder charges in the shooting death of Massey. County officials said the purpose for the commission is to address systemic issues in law enforcement practices and mental health responses to implement in the county.
The commission is expected to hold listening sessions beginning in September.

Massive catfish haul
A whopper of a catfish was reeled from the Mississippi River near Grand Tower.
A Missouri man said he was using a nine-foot fishing rod when he hooked a 91 pound catfish that was 53 inches long. He said even with the help of a friend, they couldn’t pull the fish onto the boat, so they dragged the beast over to a dike and then pulled it to shore.
Grand Tower is located west of Carbondale.
