Bloomington, IL – The Central Catholic High School Football team begins its 100th season in Pontiac on Friday, August 30. When the team takes the field at home the following Friday (September 6) for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against Rantoul, there will be a celebration with former players, coaches, athletic directors, and principals.
At halftime, everyone associated with Saints football will have the opportunity to gather on the new turf of Hundman Memorial Field to be recognized for their role in building the football program. A reception will precede the game as an opportunity to gather informally and share stories. In a letter to alumni, Head Football Coach Kevin Braucht stated, “The tradition of success is second to none. However, this tradition of success is just a small part of what has made football at Central Catholic so special. What really makes Saints Football so special are the relationships, the family atmosphere, and the values that this program has been rooted in for 100 years.”
The Saints began play in 1924 as St. Mary’s High School. After taking the following year off from football, they played two more seasons as St. Mary’s then as Holy Trinity from 1928-1966 before changing the school’s name to Central Catholic. According to Illinois High School Association (IHSA) records, the Saints have amassed 544 wins, against 369 losses and 34 ties through 99 seasons, with four State Championships in four different classes (2A in 1982, 1A in 1987, 3A in 1994 and 4A in 2008).
