Jersey County will be the 28th county to vote on splitting from Illinois. On May 14, the county board voted unanimously to put a non-binding question on their county general election ballot.
Illinois Radio Network reports that so far, 26 and a half southern Illinois counties have voted on such questions, and all have voted in favor. County officials said a neighboring state, such as Kentucky, could accept the counties by moving the state line.
This would also require Illinois’ permission, but Attorney General Kwame Raoul has already said that it would not happen.
