The City of Bloomington has once again been recognized by the non-profit Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA community. This is the 38th year Bloomington has earned this national designation.
To be recognized as a Tree City; a community must have a department designated for forestry, a tree care ordinance, a community forestry plan with a two-dollar per capita budget allocation and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
Bloomington’s Arbor Day observance will take place Friday, April 26, 2024, at 10:30 AM at Corpus Christi Catholic School, 1909 E Lincoln St, in Bloomington, Illinois. The City of Bloomington’s Beautification Committee has selected Corpus Christi Catholic School as the distinguished recipient of this year’s annual Arbor Day tree.
The ceremony is set to include an engaging planting event attended by third grade students from Corpus Christi, members of the Bloomington City Council, representatives from the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department, and members of the Beautification Committee. The chosen planting site at Corpus Christi promises to be a memorable location for this year’s celebration.
The Bloomington Parks & Recreation Department has conducted several projects to keep the City’s tree-friendly status in good order. The department has three crews; each led by a full-time forester, and manages all the trees on city streets, parks and right of ways.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation
with the U.S.D.A. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
