The City of Bloomington is pleased to announce the appointment of Jeff Jurgens as the new City Manager, effective May 6, 2024. Jurgens will succeed Tim Gleason, who will be stepping down from the position May 5, 2024. A formal vote appointing Jurgens will be held at the next City Council meeting on Monday night.
Jurgens brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of City operations to his new role having served a Deputy City Manager since April of 2023. Before that, he served for almost a decade as Corporation Counsel for the City. He played a pivotal role in providing legal counsel and guidance on a wide range of municipal matters, demonstrating his commitment to upholding the values and interests of the City of Bloomington.
During his tenure as Deputy City Manager, he led the reorganization of Public Works, restructuring it into three departments to maximize resources, accountability, and position the City to tackle infrastructure needs more effectively.
“I’m thrilled to announce Jeff Jurgens as our next City Manager,” said Bloomington Mayor Mboka Mwilambwe. “His Proven Track record of excellence, along with his knowledge of the City and its unique challenges, make him the ideal person to lead Bloomington into its next chapter.”
Jurgens expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “It truly is an honor to serve as the City Manager of Bloomington. I’m ready to build upon the strong foundation laid by my predecessors and working collaboratively with our dedicated staff to keep Bloomington moving forward.”
Prior to his work with the City, Jurgens was a shareholder with Springfield based law firm Sorling Northrup and previously an attorney with the Ancel Glink law firm based out of Chicago. He opened a satellite office for Ancel Glink in downtown Bloomington in 2009. Jurgens completed his undergraduate degree at Illinois State University and graduated from law school at American University in Washington D.C. While attending law school, Jurgens completed an internship in the White House Counsel’s Office.
The City will begin the process of filling the second Deputy City Manager position soon.
