Complaint filed over ‘political engagement’ day
The Illinois Policy Institute has filed complaints regarding a Chicago Teachers Union-sponsored “day of political engagement,” saying it may be in violation of school district rules.
In an email, the teachers union said it was partnering with pro-tax hike advocacy group Bring Chicago Home to take students out of class to attend a forum on the subject.
The Illinois Policy Institute notes that CPS employees are prohibited from engaging on behalf of political campaigns during work hours while they’re being paid with taxpayer funds.
Man sentenced in Germany
An American man has been convicted of murder and rape charges for attacking two University of Illinois graduates last June in Germany.
The man was accused of pushing the victims down a steep ravine. In line with German privacy laws, authorities did not identify the suspect or the victims, but family and friends identified the victims as Eva Liu, who died, and her friend Kelsey Chang, who survived.
Cheese recall
Thousands of cases of shredded cheese are being recalled in 15 states, including Illinois for fears of listeria contamination.
Sargento said the cheese varieties affected by the recall include Parmesan, white cheddar, Swiss, asiago and Monterey Jack. Listeria infections can cause serious illness and, in rare cases, death.
