Connect Transit has reduced service frequency on Jan. 12, 2024 due to a fleet maintenance issue.
The maintenance issues are related to our Proterra electric buses acquired through federal and state grants.
This issue is impacting systems across the nation.
Proterra, an American bus manufacturer, filed Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in August of 2023 to restructure their finances.
Since that time, Connect Transit has been in regular communication with Proterra.
Until recently, we have been able to secure parts and supplies.
Recent stipulations placed upon them by the bankruptcy court have limited Proterra’s ability to hire field service technicians and fulfill orders for repair parts.
Connect Transit is working with Proterra, the Federal Transit Administration, and the Illinois Department of Transportation to find solutions to our issues. Once Connect Transit Management has identified available options, they will be presented to the Board of Trustees for further direction and will continue to be communicated to the public.
“Modern buses need specialized parts and unfortunately, these parts are not readily available due to a small market and continued supply chain issues. We recognize the impact this reduction has on our riders and are actively working with suppliers. We are on the waiting list for parts and anticipate receiving them within the next few months,” said Connect Transit General Manager, David Braun.
The Yellow Route will begin running on 30-minute frequency.
