The City of Bloomington announces the promotion of Deputy Fire Chief Cory Matheny to the position of Chief, succeeding Chief Eric West.
The promotion comes as a result of Matheny’s unwavering dedication, exemplary leadership and extensive experience in fire services. Matheny has played an integral role in the department for 23 years and brings a commitment to community safety and a vision for advancing the department’s mission to
his new position. He started his career in Public Safety in 1996 serving in his hometown of Paxton, Illinois.
Chief Eric West, who assumed the role of Chief in 2021 after a 32-year tenure on the force, leaves a legacy of dedication and service. City Manager Gleason extended gratitude, saying, “We extend our sincere appreciation to Chief West for his decades of commitment to the Bloomington Fire Department. His leadership has set the stage for Chief Matheny to take the helm and continue the Department’s proud tradition of excellence.”
Matheny will start in his new position December 1, 2023.
