Joliet withdrawing grant request
Joliet Township has been awarded an $8.6 million grant to provide services to migrants, but Joliet city officials are not pleased with the development. They said a supervisor with the township applied for the grant without their knowledge.
At a city council meeting Tuesday, the mayor expressed concerns that an influx of asylum seekers would be a strain on city resources. The city has asked the township to withdraw the grant application.
Fire at U of I
Fire broke out Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium at the University of Illinois. The blaze started in a maintenance area under the stadium.
Workers told firefighters they heard a loud boom, then saw black smoke. The amount of smoke prompted firefighters to call for extra help. Fire officials believe the boom was caused by an exploding tire.
Emergency test this afternoon
Illinoisans’ cellphones are set to go off Wednesday. At 1:20 p.m. CST, the federal government plans to conduct a nationwide test of its Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts.
The EAS portion of the test will send an emergency alert to all radios and televisions, while the WEA portion of the test will direct alerts to all consumer cell phones. This is the seventh time there has been a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System.
