Amidst multiple lawsuits coming out against the Governor and company for the SAFE-T Act, an Illinois State Rep. candidate has hired a “comrade” to manage her campaign.
Sharon Chung hired former socialist Normal Town Council candidate Alex Campbell to be her Campaign Manager. Campbell tweeted out that he prefers the name “comrade.” Comrade has a range of definitions like: “a fellow soldier or member of the armed services” or “a fellow socialist or communist (often as a form of address).”
I prefer the term ‘comrade’. I believe I first learned of this phrase from a fellow student leader – Ashley Dumas (Ash if you read this I love ya)
Being a comrade means you put your privilege on the line in order to truly stand up to inequitable systems & injustices.

In 2019 Alex was on the “One People” candidate slate along with other socialists like Jenn Carrillo and Joel Studebaker. Joel Studebaker used to be Chung’s campaign treasurer.
Joel Studebaker in a Twitter bio identifies as a “Socialist” and he tweeted out “4 years ago I worked with many Democrats who laughed at the attempts of leftist socialist movements to run candidates…while they were laughing we were organizing.”
According to the “One People” website their mission: “ONE People’s Campaign is committed to winning racial, gender, climate and economic justice by dismantling systems of oppression. As people directly affected by the issues, we accomplish this through year-round community engagement, advancing progressive policies, and building governing power across Illinois.”
One People’s platform includes many ideas including “divesting funding from the police.”
Chung and McLean County Sheriff Jon Sandage have had quarrels about Chung reaching out to the families of inmates about the conditions of the McLean County jail that she has never visited. JB Pritzker, a democrat like Chung, was found by a court to be in violation of a state law that requires the IDHS to accept jail inmates who are unfit to stand trial into its custody or who are guilty by reason of insanity. The IDHS was not transporting inmates to state-run facilities and Jon Sandage had to come up with a way to fix it…he put in place a Cell Extrication and Response Team [CERT].
Democrats for the Illinois House donated inkind $1,644.15 to Friends of Sharon Chung…a few times to cover Campbell’s salary.
Her former campaign treasurer Joel Studebaker also retweeted Jenn Carillo’s tweet that 89% of the McLean County inmates should be let out… this is what McLean County Sheriff and the McLean County States Attorney have been fighting against . In recent news, a lawsuit is being filed against the Governor, Illinois Attorney General, House Speaker and Senate President.
Last week the McLean County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a complaint in McLean County Circuit Court asking the SAFE-T Act be declared unconstitutional. McLean County Sheriff Jon Sandage joined as a plaintiff in the lawsuit.
The retweet from Jenn might just come true come Jan. 1, according to Wirepoints thousands of alleged criminals could be released on Jan. 1.
The SAFE-T Act’s end to cash bail, along with making the detention of potentially dangerous defendants far more difficult, has prompted state’s attorneys across the state to warn they’ll have to let a large number of criminals out who are currently being held on bond come Jan. 1. Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow says that in the Collar Counties alone, 4,000 to 5,000 defendants will be released.
“In preparation for implementation, it has become clear that public safety is threatened if the SAFE-T Act goes into effect in its current form. Law enforcement and prosecutors are not in a position to make legislative changes but are committed to ongoing negotiations with those that hold that power,” a statement from the McLean County States Attorney Erika Reynolds reads.
Darren Bailey, the Republican gubernatorial candidate, told Cities that just two States Attorneys have not expressed opposition to the SAFE-T Act, or Purge Law as Joe Rogan had called it, that is Cook County States Attorney Kim Foxx and Lake County Eric Rinehart. All 100 of the 102 States Attorneys have spoken out against the SAFE-T Act.
“For Pritzker to stand up there and say he’s the only one that understands this and that everyone is wrong….I find that appalling and it shows how dangerous and out of touch this man is,” said Bailey.
