Mary Burress, who is in her third term as Tazewell County Treasurer, announced Monday that she will be seeking the newly-created 87th Illinois House District seat.
“For far too long Illinois politicians have used budget gimmicks and bad accounting to get by. Illinois tops the list for outbound moves. We lost a Congressional seat and almost 20,000 residents. Inflation is at a 40 year high. Ethics are broken. Our state is simply not working.”
“I’ve been blessed to be an elected official for over a decade and have earned the trust of the voters. I started my career as a part-time clerk in the Treasurer’s office, and through hard work and dedication I was elected the first Republican female Tazewell County Treasurer. I’ve worked with elected officials on both sides of the aisle at the county and municipal levels to make government accountable to its citizens. My sound judgement will translate to the General Assembly.”
“Our county has lived within its means and we have balanced our budget every year I’ve been in office. I will bring fiscal responsibility to the legislature. I promise to reject any pay increases and reject the state legislator pension plan if elected.”
“As a proud police wife I have always supported and will continue to support law enforcement. I want to fully fund the police and ensure our brave men & women have the resources they need to bring safety and order back to our streets.”
“Raising two great kids and being Gramma to my 5 awesome grandkids is my greatest achievement. They all still live in Tazewell County and are my main reason for running. Kids should be in school and learning what they need to succeed. Parents deserve to know what is being taught in the classroom. I stand with parents and will work towards transparency and common sense in education policy.”
Mary runs a vibrant countywide office with 6 full-time employees. Tazewell County has over 130,000 residents and an annual budget of $75+ million and is in excellent fiscal shape.
The new 87th House District includes all or parts of Tazewell, McLean, Logan, Woodford, Sangamon, Macon and DeWitt Counties and includes the cities and surrounding communities of Morton, Lincoln, Clinton, Illiopolis and Maroa.
