Bloomington District 87 is shortening the school day at Bloomington junior and high schools to avoid lunch periods where the potential spread of COVID is harder to mitigate. Unit 5 is not planning on shortening their hours.
“Unit 5 has no plans to alter its schedule. However, as we shared previously, it’s possible we may need to temporarily move individual classrooms to remote learning should an outbreak be declared and/or we cannot find a substitute teacher,” said Dayna Brown, Unit 5 Communications Director.
D87 Elementary schedules are not changing.
Sarah E. Raymond School of Early Education will be on remote learning until Jan. 21.
Sources tell Cities that the teachers of Sarah E. Raymond School of Early Education are being used to substitute teach and that that is the reason these educators are remote learning.
On the D87 website they address the remote learning of this early education school and the reason it is the only school in the district that is completely remote.
Why is Raymond on remote learning during this time but no other schools?
Raymond students do not qualify for a vaccination as all other students do. Raymond students also are at an age where the consistent wearing of masks is very inconsistent making for a higher risk of transmission of Covid-19 in the school setting.
There is a 99.995% chance that a child today will survive the China Coronavirus, according to a study. The BBC also analyzed a study that proves masks, especially in a school setting, are not proven to stop transmission of COVID-19.
BJHS students will be in class from 8 a.m. to 12:58 p.m. and BHS classes will go from 7:30 a.m. to 12:13 p.m. The adjusted schedules also run through Jan. 21 with the district anticipating the normal full day schedule resuming on Jan. 24.
This D87 announcement comes shortly after a statement explaining the unsafe environment fostered from short staff.
“Due to the number of COVID cases and quarantines across the community that is impacting our ability to staff our buildings safely and appropriately, all District 87 schools will be closed on Friday, Jan. 7.”
D87 is providing to-go lunches as the students leave.
